Old Point Comfort Lighthouse
The Long Watch
Built in 1802 at Old Point Comfort in Hampton, Virginia, this lighthouse stands at the entrance to Hampton Roads, where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic. It is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in the United States, still guiding vessels today as it has for more than two centuries.
Unlike its offshore counterpart, Old Point Comfort was a place of arrival. The tower rises beside an attached keeper’s house, grounding the light in daily life and long routine. Someone lived here. Someone tended the lamp, watched the weather, and kept the passage open night after night.
This piece captures both the stone tower and the dwelling at its base, emphasizing endurance, habitation, and the quiet labor behind safe harbor. It is a lighthouse of presence rather than warning.
Still standing. Still lit. Still doing the work.
Approx. 11" x 12"
